Study Task 7 - Typogateaux Rationale

Typogateaux
Group: Megan Hawkins, Ewan Barr, Mehroosa Jan, Phoebe Hall and Natalie Salman

This typogateaux pays homage to Lucida Blackletter as Blackletter is an important aspect in the history of typography, and was used across Europe for over sixteen centuries. We chose Lucida Blackletter as it’s a more simplified and modern rendition of one of the main classifications of the different Blackletter fonts - Fraktur. Fraktur was distinct to the other classifications as its counters retained their curve but were juxtaposed with bold stems and angular serifs. This is shown in Lucida Blackletter as the whole alphabet is based on a letter with a rounded counter which contrasts the sharp edges of the vertexes, terminals and exaggerated serifs. All these typographic elements are conveyed in the uppercase ‘W’, which is what is the typogateaux is based on.
