This typeface is derived from the outlines traced from the screenshot of all the geocaches I interacted with as a response to the positive feedback to this process used in the ‘mental map’ initial idea. As it’s not based on a grid structure, the typeface is very irregular with no fixed baseline, cap-height or x-height allowing it to have a quirky personality. The altering between wavy curves and straight, slanted stems connote shifts in directions, imitating lines on a map. The counters of this typeface are never completely closed, except for the uppercase ‘O’ which suggests a less serious overall tone to the typeface’s personality.
When using the glyphs in the rotations they originally were as highlighted in red in the map, the typeface can join together through tight kerning to create a line that imitates the lines found within conventional maps. The changes in angles and the curves in the overall line are created naturally through the nature of the curved and angled stems within the typeface.
This typeface contrasts Typeface 1 as it connotes an overall more serious tone as it’s structured. It is derived from two lines with one based on the geocaches found, and one on the geocaches not found. The placement of the lines have a strict rule as they cannot be rotated however it can be multiplied. Due to the nature of strict lines, the typeface is made up of slanted strokes in an equal weight with angular counters. The crossbars however are the same angle and length as they are derived from the same line and therefore can act as serifs in directing the readers’ eyes through the text. When placed together with tight kerning between the lines rather than the actual glyphs, the personality overall is architectural and rigid, which allows for its serious tone.
