Bookbinding Experiments

For my book, the binding needs to reflect the idea of sharing and lack of control.

Softcover with flaps and Pamphlet stitching - the flaps allow for lots of variation as I can experiment with where the fold goes.
  1. softcover flaps in original placement (one inside front cover and one in back) the traditional format for this bookbind can be used to have text going in opposing directions so that people sitting opposite each other can read the same page.
  2. have the backcover flap cover the body of pages and be visible with front cover flap - this allows for both flaps to share information and for the backcover to act as a container for the pages which allows for other types of bookbinds that may have less structure such as elastic bands.
  3. have the backcover flap cover the front as well meaning that the information between the inner back and the front cover can share information as the front cover needs to make sense to the reader.
Foldout zine / Poster zine

This bookbind is interesting for the theme of shared living as it can act both as a book and also as an item to place in your shared living space - I think this would be more effective as an insert (tip in/off) into another book bind.

Wiro bounding

To make this experiment, I just tied each hole with rope as I didn't have access to a wiro machine. I chose wiro over spiral as I felt as though spiral would communicate some relation to sketchbooks/notebooks/educational which I didn't want.
These binds are effective for my theme as they allow for the book to be read by multiple people as they have 360 rotation.
