Content Concept Form Presentation

Content Concept Form PRODUCTION
Have to decide on a question for your book - the clearer the question the more precise the answer. e.g How can the visual and physical experiences of shared living be represented through a book format? Need to think about how to reinvent what a book is - start by thinking about what a book is and then what it can be and how to push it - question the conventions “all books start from their content” need to have a lot of content and research done to guide the brief and production What needs to be considered:
  • production methods
  • bind
  • stock/material
  • typography
  • print method
  • page layout/structure of information
  • these need to be pushed but the book still needs to be understood *what are the core ideas here?
  • mock ups/experiments (evaluate them)
  • commercial considerations vs access to resources
  • Preparing documents to be sent to print - any considerations in regards to print methods (digital or offset)
  • Understanding colour/ink and related standards and systems
  • (CMYK, Pantone, etc.)
  • Identifying spot colour, spot varnish, die cut, emboss, and other finishes in digital art work ready for print
  • What printers will be expecting - marks, bleeds, etc.

What are your rules? this allows a more justified approach to experimentation Based on:
  • a grid structure
  • a certain use of materials
  • how is the book going to be used
Think about how you want the reader to experience the book - textures - what do they mean? Think about the weight of the paper and the content - e.g book “Circles” which has different paper weights based on how heavy the rock being shown is. https://www.itsnicethat.com/articles/3100-visual-editions Kapow! by Adam Thirlwell

Plan for today
  1. Analyse your book in pairs - its conventions and what you would do differently to communicate its message better.
  2. Decide on what is your question?
  3. What are your rules?
  4. What are your experiments for next week - make a list?
