Choosing Final Book Bind

After being set on the idea of a book that can rotate 360, having a spiral or wiro bound was the way to go. I had initially tested this out using the plastic, less visually appealing spiral binds provided in the Library shop however after using a clear plastic spiral bind from a peer, it was much more effective however I didn't use a proper drill punch to test it properly.

It proved difficult to find good spiral binds online that were affordable and not bought in bulk. All that I could find would take a long time to arrive and I didn't need 100 of them. I ordered two other types of spiral and wiro binds that I could find and would arrive on time which was a traditional metal spiral bind and a bind that I've never seen before which was called Loose Leaf Rings which could work as a wiro bind as I initially wanted, but also clipped and came in both clear and purple which could relate to my colour scheme.
 Loose Leaf Ring

  • Good for colour
  • Needs less hole punches - less that could go wrong
  • Can be unclipped - let the reader organise book
  • Bulkier than the others
  • only thing that can be a wiro bind
Metal Spiral Bind
  • more professional
  • bends too easily
  • not as interesting? - connotes a notebook?
Clear Plastic Spiral Bind
  • fun and sturdy
  • doesn't take attention away
  • very minimal but effective
  • lots of hole punches at short intervals

After testing out all the binds, I narrowed it down to either the clear spiral bind or the loose leaf binds. The issue with the metal bind is that it bent too easily, and I didn't have access to a binding machine that is more suitable for it as the one we have is only suitable for stretchier, plastic based spiral binds which just ruined the metal bind therefore it didn't work as a bind.
The clear spiral bind worked well however was easy to mess up with the hole punching as it would have to be manually drill hole punched as I didn't have access to a machine that would make these holes equally and professionally. I don't think my outcome was bad however I feel like the loose leaf bind provided the most interesting book bind that allowed the book to be reorganised by the reader therefore less limiting.
