Crit Feedback and Silent Crit

One on One Crit
  • The print methods I used as either a complimentary process to my zine or a backup if I can't risograph works really well - the best are the bitmapped green images or the purple and green printed over a scan.
  • Had an issue with whether digital printing is still effective for my book - response was it works well because of the way the image is treated especially the bitmapping - need to apply this to more images.

  • doesn't need to have text can just be image heavy
  • spiral bind is great but use a nicer one
  • look at synonyms for shared space, a word that encompasses that for the title
  • dont need to focus on idea of it being able to stand up as just holding it people can read the other sides
  • no need for front cover is approved but can still experiment with it - this could be the poster?
  • stickers good idea and so are perforated pages - poster idea for front cover works better but can still include the idea within a page
  • a5 size good so it can be handheld
  • screen printed poster in the way the bitmap was treated - maybe much more colourful so that it stands out.
  • fold out poster could become the sleeve rather than a tip in - need to test how this would fit around a wiro bound

  • look into recycled paper for more texture - paperstock should maybe be thinner than what is being used right now.
  • paper ordered from G.F Smith isn't appropriate for book - the texture is too leathery and the colour of the paper is too yellow rather than off-white. need a more natural looking alternative with specks or texture

Silent Crit
  • Maybe have the stickers in the shape of the grid system as that would link.
  • Perforation idea would be effective, relates well to concept.
  • French fold could be better than using bind - one continuous stock of paper reflects sharing.
  • A varied colour palette is more successful than black and white.
  • like the idea of the poster as the cover.
  • title - could just keep it simply as "shared"
  • perforated would be cool too to share pages
  • bind with belly band and have loose sheets to share out.
  • I love that you have used a combination of methods, the combination really adds to the theme of the book.
  • Stickers could be of the main focal point of the images so the wardrobe or the teddy.
  • My fave imagery are the bitmaps - dark green works well and dark blue - prefer the use of darker colours.
  • Really like the paper stock in the book sleeve - looks like a table surface.
  • some of the extra imagery on the cover like sweet wrappers looks a bit random if you go to do a collage cover would look better if the whole cover was full of different identifying objects personal to each house mate maybe?
  • How can the content be 'shared' throughout the book? Could pages be dye-cut so that for example page 1 shows the space on page 6?

Questions I asked:
  1. Good title for book? I only got one person who gave an idea for this and the idea was to keep it simply as "shared" however I feel like there may still be a more interesting word as I would want to use the title name for stickers.
  2. Ideas for stickers? The two ideas I got for stickers was to have it in the shape of the grid system which I don't think would work as that would just be plain rectangular stickers, or to make them the main focal point of the images e.g the wardrobe or teddy however I have already tried this idea and the issue of finding the line between a purposeful sticker and one that people would want and want to actively share hasn't been resolved.
  3. Perforated or poster for front cover? I had the same person give feedback that both ideas were good but they specified that the poster would be the better idea for the front cover. I had another state that perforated works better for my theme.
Overall I had positive feedback on the print methods, the way the images were treated and the colours. There was some confusion in the crit as people thought the content in my prototype was going to be actually used for the book but there was still some useful ideas to use images from other rooms scaled up in collages. I also didn't really get much people responding to my questions which was disappointing as these are the issues I still have however some peer led crits or some experimentation should hopefully resolve this.

Paper stock - good response to the paper stock of the book sleeve noting that it looks like a "table surface" which emphasises my need to go look for a paper stock that has specks and/or texture.
Book binds - using French Fold would be better especially if I use one continuous stock of paper to represent sharing however I can already see the issue with this as I would need a very long sheet of paper, and it would defeat the purpose of multiple people using the book.
Another idea was a bind with a belly band so that the pages could just be given out however I feel that this book bind has restraints to where the book can be used as it can't be used on the move or outdoors.
Processes - Explore dye-cutting to share content throughout the book
