OUGD505 Task 2

Pick one of these issues, and answer the following questions:
  • Why would you research? (Why is it important?)
  • What do you need to find out about it? (who the audience are?)
  • How would you research this? (interviews, etc?)
  • Where would you research this? (on the internet, visiting a place, somebody else?)
  • Make a list.
IDEA:
Future Dystopia/Alternate world where all design processes have to be produced not using the computer.

Why is it important?
I find that there is a disconnect in Graphic Design from the real world due to the heavy use of computer-based softwares. Physical processes by hand create a sense of intimacy and a more personal approach that is missing in design today; disknowledgment of the importance of craft in design and to design's history.

What do you need to find out about it?
  • History - how was craft used in design before? What was its purpose?
  • Digital designers - what needs do they answer and has it gone too far/is it needed anymore?
  • Practical designers - what needs to they answer and is it needed anymore?
  • Merging both design practices.
  • Practical/hand processes and how to approach all of these without using the computer.
How would you research this?
  • Interviewing the print and printmaking technicians. (Primary)
  • Looking at designers who have been around for a long time - their shift from craft heavy design to digital and what they think about it. (Primary)
  • Surveys, focus groups - younger audiences. Do they see the need for this? (Primary)
  • Books - this is avoiding the computer for a more relatable understanding and looking at older sources. (Secondary)
  • Web - looking at digital sources to create that discussion. (Secondary)
Where would you research this?
  • Exhibitions - physical experiences.
  • Web - digital.
  • Book - physical.
  • In university - workshops and studios.
INITIAL FEEDBACK
Good idea but shouldn't think too far ahead of what I want to produce. It has a clear issue that I want to explore/resolve and I should research designers who have been around for a long time.
