Typeface Adjustments

For more legibility, I started using other shapes to adjust some of the more bold ones. I used the shape from the 'c' glyph to create a more legible 'v' without getting rid of the flower shapes. However, I don't think it's necessary as the point of the typeface is to celebrate the organic shapes more than its function which may be a commentary on analog processes itself.

Typeface Development

Initial Idea

I wanted to create a typeface that connoted the idea of organic shapes and how my project leans towards analog processes/ an analog world. I began by using Futura and beginning to round out the shapes, with the plan to use the drawn 'petal' shapes as starting points into transforming the font. However the title of the book itself is 'Meta' and the theme is organic and analog processes therefore using digital means and an already existing font to become the typeface felt counterproductive.

Development

 I initially collected flowers and dry pressed them to be used within the book.

I experimented by organising the petals to write the title out as a way of just creating a logotype however found the process of just fitting the dried flowers together to create letterforms a more engaging process within itself than transforming Futura on Illustrator, and decided to continue to create the full alphabet as content for the book. 

I'm really happy with the final letterforms as they explore a more honest idea of 'organic shapes' while exploring the theme of analog processes. Creating typefaces this way was faster, and having less control over what the outcome of the letterforms would be as the flowers/petals were already fixed dry shapes created letterforms that I wouldn't have been able to think of to draw digitally.

Beaded Banner

Beaded banners are becoming popular on social media throughout young creatives a different ways of exploring creating imagery as more and more designers are moving away from digital means. The idea of using beads for my project would be interesting as it's not only staying current with trends within my target audience, but also could be more visually engaging to them through means of nostalgia and also its uniqueness. 

Based on this guide I found online, I began by creating a banner with no digital plan at all as a way of comparing the efficiency of digital design and whether it's necessary.

Idea Development - Planning

As a way of linking both the website and book, and focusing in on the idea that this is targeted at young creatives while hinting to the future to continue the element of a "dystopian future/alternate world" from my primary research, the end page of the book will reference a future where analog processes no longer exist to emphasise the importance of them to the reader. It will then link the website, suggesting that it's the digital version of the book however it will instead explore the idea that the message is lost through digital means - that analog is better.

• Beaded banner and clay outcomes will serve the purpose of showing how digital and analog processes intertwine however still lean towards analog processes being better.
• Clay - physical object/tangibility versus just the photos - meta that it cannot be communicated to viewer irl
• Beaded banner - needs to be planned out digitally for efficiency but beaded image won't be as tangible/visual as the physical outcome

Title of book is Meta to highlight idea of dystopian future but also be a reference to its own analog/tangibility.

Experimenting - Cross Stitch and ASCII

Cross Stitch - RESEARCH

I wanted to recreate a flower as this is the basis of all my imagery, and I wanted something that was bold enough to then be translated into digital pixel art. The image also had to call for a single coloured thread as I don't have multiple colours, and want to approach all my processes in a monochromatic colour scheme as a way of keeping it focused on the process rather than the imagery.

I like the rose in this image I found as it's bold and can be recreated using just one thread.

Cross Stitch - TEST

I noticed really fast that the thread I was using was too thin and did not cover up the white AIDA cloth however the "x" being visible brings focus to the process by showing how the pattern was created, and also that it could be clearly generated into ASCII
