Which version is the best?
- Third is best for consistency.
- Prefer third but lacks the same impact as the imagery on the first.
- The third idea is by far the strongest as it works best just being kept simple.
- Third is best because it's not cramped but second works well too - combine both.
Concept
Is the concept and interpretation imaginative and original?
- Less obvious approach to the book
- Concept and idea is justified with the themes in the book and is a less obvious approach - unique.
- Concept behind the work is a more unconventional reflection of Auggie and his interests are which is good.
- Strong theming and reasoning.
- This idea is by far the strongest and works best just by being kept simple.
Strengths
- Strong, original idea
- Typeface is well developed
- Chalkboard texture is well linked
Change/improvement
Front cover:
- The second to last row of illustrations could be moved up slightly so there's a gap between the text at the bottom and the illustrations.
- Bigger gap after the initials in the author's name to be more legible.
- Could benefit from use of similar chalk illustrations.
- Change the quote on the front to be the same typeface - could give off a stronger consistency.
- R.J. Palacio - need a dot after the j.
- Author's name needs to be chalky too.
Spine:
- "R" in R.J could be bigger - not same size as front cover.
- Should be chalky for consistency
- R.J. Palacio - need a dot after the j.
Back cover:
- The illustration line on the back page could be more textured or thinner to match the lines on the front page (third design)
- Shape on back should be chalky but the layout works well.
- The font doesn't fit as well with the rest of the text. Use the same typeface or use some letters as the typeface.
Typeface:
- The B looks like a D.
Ideas
- Third variation is most effective as it's less cramped but the second works well too - combine the two. Include a bit of the diagrams around the title rather than have it really structured to seem more childlike
- Experiment with colours it make it stand out and be more fun.
- Like the initial idea with elements of science in the background - take elements from this.
- Combine chalky text with mathematic symbols.
