Design Principles Submission Briefing

  • All principles need to be blogged about.
  • Next Tuesday --> Final, silent crit of final 3 posters and design boards if ready. Need to be printed A3 B&W. If the person looking at it doesn't understand what it's about then it's a failure of communication.
  • Submission is on 5th TUEDAY MARCH: Physical portfolio, 3 final posters, design boards and blog.
  • Final posters need to be printed in tile A3 using Acrobat.
Four Criteria
  • Visual Quality and Resolution
Demonstrate visual literacy and visual language aka use design principles/theories, write about it and use correct terminology.
All needs to be written in third person in 8 or 9 pt maximum and in serif as it's more legible at a smaller scale.
Analyse how using only image, type, or only image and type changing how you approached the idea.

*On eStudio there is starting points on how to approach writing visual literacy for each poster.

  • Problem Analysis
Identify and evaluate your ideas and what you want to achieve in relation to the posters. E.g identify your problem which is your theme and issue and how you intend to address it.
What's the purpose of it? What's the message? How do you intend them to be used? Do I wish to persuade someone or draw attention to a fact? What information do you wish to communicate? Will you use or avoid the use of uncomfortable images?

Susan Sontag - do you intend your posters to invoke sympathy or suspicion? How do we avoid these issues?
  • Research
Need more practical research to apply to my posters.
Find practical research that relates to each poster genre.
Use of design principles highlighted in this research needs to be used.
Analyse why certain design decisions are appropriate to your idea.

  • Professionalism
Need ongoing critical reflection of work.
Evidence of engaging with crits.

Design Boards
Each design board needs to be laid out perfectly and be consistent in layout throughout the pages.
Only write a short paragraph on how you use design principles.
Need to make it clear and direct the reader on where to look on the boards.
