Feedback

Idea 1 - Mental Map
  • Hand-done quality is successful
  • Colour scheme works well
  • Should be more zoomed in so that symbols are more clear
  • Might be better suited for a square format
  • Architectural influence is cool (blueprints)
  • Could you develop the juxtaposition between playfulness and regimented aesthetic of blueprints?
  • Could the arrows and lines direct the reader to something?
  • Messy aesthetic symbolises brain activity
  • The messiness and sketchy quality really works
  • The typeface is clever especially because it's legible
  • Could move forward by making mind maps in new locations
Idea 2 - Conversation Map
  • The simplicity works really well and the use of negative space is also successful
  • Pick certain parts of the conversation and modify it to act as a key (e.g rivers, parks, etc)
  • Really cool idea
  • Like the overall look of it
  • This could be explored further by just repeating the process over and over again
Idea 3 - Focal Point Map
  • This is the best idea
  • Experiment with inverting and modifying the photographs even more to make it even more unclear
  • Maybe combine the two versions because I like the white and the original
  • Create a gif
  • Really interesting composition
  • Good use of colours and texture which is relevant to location of map
  • Dan develop this in different locations which could be supergraphic.
  • Challenges the idea of a traditional map style
  • Uses a good approach to using several layers
  • Visually very strong
  • I like the ambiguity of it
My response
I am not surprised that there is more engagement with Map 1 and Map 3 as they have the most conceptual backgrounds and overall I find them both to be more successful than Map 2. The issues I face with Map 2 is that although it can be developed, I feel there is not enough quantitive or source material such as images, and I am not as engaged with the concept. Map 1 is interesting in the way that it doesn't show much of a physical/environmental direction and its overall aesthetic is really successful as (as noted in the feedback) it resembles architectural blueprints. The typeface is my favourite but I feel as though the concept being Map 3 is much more interesting and the successful elements of Map 1 can work with the concept of Map 3.
I agree with the feedback that Map 3 is the best idea as it directly challenges maps and focal points and has a lot of visual potential. Moving forward I need to decide on a more specific approach and after asking Pat, geocaching seems like the most interesting.
