identify themes and create a (bound) publication
need to create an individual concept for the publication - we need to write ourselves a brief.
the audience, branding and positioning of publication needs to be determined early on and it’s based on our location.
book’s competition doesn’t have to be the same theme it could be the same target audience/same shop e.g if your book is about stone ur competitor isn’t just stone books it could be nature, geology etc..
production cost has to be considered and the profit too so you can’t create a hardback embossed book if your pricing isn’t going to be expensive.
initial ideas: something urban, interior, zine-style, etc… could be a reference book, youthful/student living
*go back and include brands as a theme
*include bargaining possibly? recycling, secondhand
have to think about the conceptual relationship between the book and the binding.
do we want the book to be an easy read? e.g theme of book is the hard life of a swimmer so book needs to be more of a hard read for reader to experience the concept.
treating images with different chemicals/fabrics - e.g soaking portrait of swimmer in chlorine for how long they were in the water.
brief is about PRODUCTION so content isn’t marked however still must be professional. Need to go look at books to understand and generate ideas.
References:
- Slanted Magazine: based on a text. the themes arise from the words in this text so that’s an approach to do.
- Irma Boom: idea for how conceptual the book can be - it’s not about practicality. it can be experimental.
- Catalogue Press - based on where the book is going to be read/used and adjust to that.
- have to think about how a book is a physical experience - it can’t be a book that can easy work as a PDF.
- informed decisions about the practical elements of your production
- choosing appropriate methods/strategies/investigation of design solutions - every research method should be informed by targets e.g target audiences, price, theme, purpose. can experiment but needs to have a purpose.
- challenge the boundaries of publication.
- Explored a range of print production techniques and processes e.g indesign, book binding, application of stock, foiling, embossing, letter-pressing, digital print processes
- Ongoing research - book design, production methods, techniques. visit book shops, look online. continue to look for inspiration. not on the theme bt general research into possible formats/production methods.
- consider ambition vs practicality.
- experiments, developments, prototypes *to justify appropriate methods you must evidence a range!!
- think about type and layout, photo quality/editing, preparing the document for print.
