Grid Experimentations

For my first experimentation with layout and the book design, I created a grid based on one of my initial research images which was a sketch of the layout of my living room. I then traced it onto illustrator and used it as a layout for InDesign for the placement of text and image to explore the idea of how different forms of information can share a page and how it can relate to my theme/research. I generally like the grid as its restraints allow for interesting cut outs of the images which make me consider which part of the image I want to show, and thinking about how to include text but keep it readable.

I chose Times New Roman as the font size is quite small as the book would be around a5 and this serif font is easiest to read small as the serif guides the eyes. I also experimented with the alignment of the text and how it works with the grid - initially the text was all left-aligned to aid with reading however I began to experiment with how text can align within the grid by aligning it based on where the image is based. At the top, the image is on the left so the text is left aligned to convey the idea of how information shares the page. The centre text is justified as there are 3 images that share that row and therefore the text follows the rectangular rule they follow. The bottom text is right aligned to the image on the right however I feel like this may be least successful as it's very close to the image and affects readability.
