Ready, Steady, Book Task

Task:
To go on a journey and document many types of information such as words, image, drawings, textures etc. Make notes about where the journey is, how long it took, repeated themes as these all need to be translated into a book.
The book isn't content dependant - the form and production process needs to be considered.
  • Format
  • Paper stock
  • Binding
  • Colour
  • Size
  • Reader experience
  • Title
This task is important and effective for SB1 as it allows us to think solely about the production of the book - how does the theme dictate the production methods?

Response:

We went on a journey to the fashion hall as the large windows and general colour scheme were quite different to what we're used to in the graphics hall. Themes noted were:

  • Black
  • Staircase
  • Square, Rectangle, Triangle
  • Long
  • Reflective
  • Window
  • Flecks - floor
Outcome:
Title: Staircase to Fashion

Paper stock:
The reflective, black wall in the hall really stood out and inspired our choice of a black, graphite-like paper stock that is also reflective. Used that as the main paper stock to contrast against the tracing paper which references the large windows, and then a shiny silver paper is included to create contrast as the wall contrasted with the floor and emphasise the idea of reflective qualities.

Bind:
The concertina is used to represent the idea of a journey as it's a long continuous paper, but also the folds represent the idea that we went on a lot of staircases to find the fashion hallway - directly referencing the title.

Layout:
There are two concertina folds on a base paper. The concertinas are different shapes - one being a rectangle that directly relates to the stairs themselves and the long hallway, and a triangle to represent the more angular elements to the architecture that we saw. The inclusion of both these concertinas fitting together represents the way the sharp, unusual angles work well with the long rectangular hallways.

When actually produced, the book would be double the size and the images would be placed so that they overlap each other, and get smaller and smaller to represent the perspectives of looking down a long hallway, and down the staircase.

Feedback

  • Good consideration of the reader's experience
  • The way the book is opened from two directions is interesting and unusual and represents our journey very well
  • The idea of letting images get smaller and smaller also communicate the long halls and staircase well
  • Very unconventional book therefore content should be much more considerate of the unconventional style
  • Well thought out decisions for the production - all links back to our ideas and themes
