"An entirely white space, furnished as a monochrome living room, is 'obliterated' with multi-coloured stickers"
Initially, the installation begins with a completely blank white room including the furnishing and lighting.
Visitors are given round, bright and colourful stickers designed by Kusama for the exhibition at the door.
At the end, the room is covered in an explosion of colours and round stickers that connote a playful atmosphere which contrasts heavily with the initial dull and clinical room.
This exhibition lasted a few weeks and the aim was to allow visitors to cover the blank, white room in colourful stickers that are designed specifically for the exhibition by Kusama. The visitors don't have any rules to follow therefore they can create any patterns, use any colours, cover any part of the room and explore any ideas they have with it.
The idea behind the installation was based on Kusama's recollections of her childhood as originally, the installation was targeted at children. She talks about her childhood in her biography as a "hallucinogenic experience where landscapes were clouded by spots" which she continues throughout her body of work.
This project is relevant to my project idea as Kusama is sharing and allowing the audience to experience an experience she has had and experience her work more interactively. Her work that is usually covered in these dots were passively enjoyed whereas with this exhibition they can be actively engaged with her vision. This translation of her print based work to an exhibition then to a screen-based video is interesting for my project as it makes me consider the idea of time and time lapses.
Marpi - Melting Room

The exhibition space is really large and impactful which is effective for the purpose of the projections as the visitors are meant to respond to the large walls by moving around and allowing depth sensors to capture these movements and translate it into the projections by having the fluid images distort.
Marpi's aim for this projection exhibition is to create an ever changing organic space that reacts to the people around it. The textures are inspired by physically organic textures such as "marble and rock strata, wood grain, oil paint, river erosions" and the visual information is continuously generated during the exhibition in real-time and morphs based on the movements of the visitors which emphasises the idea of a truly organic atmosphere.
What's interesting about this exhibition that I want to apply to my own projection is the idea that the content of the projections is continuously being generated and is based on the visitor's interactions with it as this captures the idea of sharing an experience in a space which relates to shared living.
Production considerations for my project: Using Kinect sensors for my exhibition in order to allow visitors to interact with the projections. (A line of motion sensing input devices by Microsoft)
