Brief of the Week 2 - New Years Resolution

Brief
The brief is to create something based on a New Years Resolution in your crit group.

Initial Ideas:
  • Learning a language
  • Stop procrastinating
  • Get healthier/fitter
  • Do one nice thing a day
  • Be more positive
  • Take more chances
  • Get more sleep
The idea we decided to progress on is the resolution to "do one nice thing a day" as it allowed for all our resolutions to be included, and possibly a more open interpretation of the brief that could be relatable to a larger audience.

Production Ideas:
  • Wheel of Fortune idea - a physical typography based wheel or a random selection app that randomises the nice act of the day. The limitations with this is that the physical version would only be able to have so many options based on the size, therefore an app would be a better approach. An issue with the app however would be having to be aware of the resolution being shown repeatedly, even if it's already been done/ letting the user keep track of the resolutions they've done (UX/UI)
  • Magic 8 Ball - similarly to the Wheel of Fortune idea, the app would be interacted by the user (UI) by having the phone shaken, and the random act of kindness would be generated much like a real magic 8 ball.
  • Social media platform via an app which would give options for the act of kindness that could then be documented and shared with other people using the app. This would allow users to form friendships/create a community however it may take away the element of doing the acts of kindness solely to be nice.
  • A book that allows the reader to select a random act of kindness, and rip out the page (a token) when it's been completed. The pages act as collectable tokens as when all are completed, the reverse side would create an image/poster.

Idea:
Went with the book idea as it's the most refined and practical physical outcome, and the physicality of it may make the reader feel more responsible for delivering on the act of kindness - they would also feel a sense of self achievement with being able to collect the tokens.

The Outcome:
We decided the book should be a small pocketbook as it's more practical, and can be used as a stocking filler at Christmas for the next year.
Based on the idea that it takes 28 days to form a habit, the book has just over 30 pages to ensure that the user would be in the habit of doing a good deed everyday, and fulfilling the resolution. Additional options also is less limiting for the reader, and would give more possibility to have them do this everyday.
To further develop the concept, we could create a book for each month with a clear theme/good deeds related to that month.

The template of the book before being cut and bound - the full image of the back that would become the poster based on the tokens the user collects. The colour scheme of the poster is based on a more stereotypical "hippie" 60's design, but also relates to current day trends with colours inspired by clothing trends and a 3d effect added to the smiley face.
The grey and yellow is more subtle and limited in colour to contrast the poster - reflecting the positive outcomes of doing a good deed everyday. This could have been exemplified with a monochromatic black and white colour scheme however that may have been to harsh. The yellow connotes energy and joy, and the grey adds contrast without being as harsh as black.
