After getting many positive reactions to my developed typeface in the peer feedback and being encouraged to keep the concept simple, I decided to explore the idea of using short impactful text to bring equal attention to how both the typeface and the text work together to represent the idea of marine pollution being excessive and highly toxic to the planet and ourselves.
Initially, I decided on "eighteen billion pounds" as from my research, I found that 18 billion pounds of plastic trash winds up in our oceans each year (https://www.rubiconglobal.com/blog-ocean-pollution-facts/) and decided that that fact was enough of a shock factor to bring across my message. As Susan Sontag's essay highlighted, images used in different contexts connote more shock to the viewer. In this case, my plastic bottle typeface can act almost as an image as it's a silhouette to instantly associate the fact with plastic pollution which is known as a massive issue, and can act as a reminder and cause the viewer to feel sympathy.
Initially, I used the grid to try and adjust the typeface so that they are consistent in size and follow a rigid baseline however due to its more angled and unfixed structure, it actually makes them inconsistent as they are in different angles.
Here the text is left aligned in the centre of the image which highlights their inconsistencies and doesn't fit the overall personality of the typeface - quirky, angled.
Using just an outline emphasises the shape a bit more, hides inconsistencies but highlights personality as the use of a bottle shape is more obvious through the outline serving as the shape and the black figure being the same as the background suggesting its transparency as plastic bottles usually are.
One word is more simple and effective - the bottle is most obvious in the 'i' and hopefully that directs the viewer to understand the basis of the typeface and thinks about plastic pollution.
Issues highlighted: Do I need to make it more obviously about the ocean? Or is it clear to most people that plastic pollution relates to the ocean? Is this composition and plain fill impactful enough to translate to people from a distance?
